I like to read a fair amount of Canadian authors, especially authors who fit the bill for my queer Canadian book blog, Casey the Canadian Lesbrarian. But trying to combine my new love of audiobooks and my long-standing love of Canadian authors has been difficult. One reason for this is I can’t really afford to buy audiobooks, so I pretty much rely on digital audiobooks through my local library. Obviously, what is available through those channels is limited. But more significantly, there are a lot of great Canadian books that simply don’t exist in audiobook format. This lack only gets more pronounced when you’re talking about Canadian books by authors of color and/or LGBTQ authors. Where are the Canadian audiobooks?? Happily, I’ve been noticing lately that this situation is changing for the better! So I present for you 10 amazing Canadian audiobooks (fiction and nonfiction) now available. Some are new books, some are old, but all are great reads. Canadian audiobooks for the win! [Note: Ive included a few Indigenous authors who live in what we call Canada here, but that doesnt mean they identify as Canadian]. Adult Onset by Ann-Marie MacDonald MacDonald’s most recent novel is a fascinating, riveting book that takes place over one week in the life of a (lesbian) stay-at-home mom in Toronto. Its psychologically rich and complicated, dealing with the stresses of motherhood and remembered trauma of physical illness and familial homophobia. Its painfully real a lot of the time, but often in a way that makes you feel less alone. And in a way that makes you chuckle at the dark humor. MacDonald, who is also an accomplished actress to addition to an author, narrates the audiobook and she is absolutely fabulous. She has a wonderful expressive voice. She also does great different voices and accents (including Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) for different characters. The Conjoined by Jen Sookfong Lee This is an un-put-downable book, part family drama and part mystery. (Although you dont get the tidy resolution you do in traditional mystery, so be warned!) The crux of the story is that as Jessica sorts through her mother’s belongings after her recent funeral, she makes a shocking discovery: two dead girls curled into the bottom of her mother’s freezer. The characters are expertly drawn, all authentic and sympathetic, all far from perfect. Sookfong Lees writing is incisive, thoughtful, and generous. The audiobook voice actor, Sabryn Rock, is pitch perfect, embodying the chilling thrills and family emotional highs and lows. A great book for fans of Megan Abbott. This Accident of Being Lost: Songs and Stories by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson Nishnaabeg writer Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s most recent collection is just incredible, as I’ve come to expect with her work. This book is a collection of stories and songs/poems. As you might guess, it’s wonderfully diverse in format as it blurs the lines between fiction and nonfiction and poetry and prose. But that diversity is just as prominent in content. In addition to contemporary stories and poems, there are also numerous stories with a futuristic bent. I don’t know how to describe her writing except so beautiful and often very funny! The author, who is also a performer and musician, does the narration in the audiobook. She is lovely with her quietly powerful voice, just a little deadpan sarcastic in the perfect way to match the humor in many of the pieces. The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline For those of you not in the know about Canadian book stuff, this YA novel by a Metis author won one of our biggest literary awards in 2017 (the Governor General’s Literary Award). Deservedly, obviously. It’s about a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by climate change where settlers hunt Indigenous people for their bone marrow, which gives others the crucial ability they have lost: to dream. Lots of fascinating world-building to be found here! The audiobook production of this smart, moving YA is excellent. Superb narration by Meegwun Fairbrother (who is Ojibway), and some sparse but effective sound effects like cackling fire and mood music. The Best Kind of People by Zoe Whittall Zoe Whittall is one of my favorite (Canadian) authors, and The Best Kind of People is her most recent novel. It’s a bit of a departure from her first two novels, which are all very much in that niche of very queer and very Canadian. There are also queer characters in this one, but it’s set in the States and queerness isn’t so much a focus as is feminism and rape culture. It’s a highly perceptive, character-driven book told from multiple perspectives. The story revolves around a central question: what if one of the men accused in a high profile sexual assault case was your husband or father? Audiobook narrator extraordinaire Cassandra Campbell excels at these kinds of intense stories that center on relationships and the dark complexities of human lives. I’m Afraid of Men by Vivek Shraya This short nonfiction audiobook is actually my current read! I’ve been a fan of Shraya’s work for years now. I was so pleased to see her latest book available as an audiobook. In this extended personal essay, Shraya writes about the damage she has accumulated over the course of her life as a result of misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia. She describes how masculinity was forced on her as a kid, how she had to learn to convincingly perform it to survive (even and perhaps especially in the queer community), and how it still haunts her after coming out as trans. This is a passionate, smart book. It’s also very accessible, a good choice for someone not too well versed in the gender issues Shraya discusses. It’s another author-narrated book, done extremely well by Shraya who also has a background as a performer/musician. A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews A Complicated Kindness is one of my all-time favorite books. It’s so exciting that it’s now available as an audiobook! It’s another Governor General Literary Award winner. The novel is a darkly funny coming-of-age story that is alternately full of grief and hope. 16-year-old Nomi lives in a Mennonite (a small sect of fundamentalist Christianity) community in Manitoba. The church has just shunned her mom and sister, which basically shuts them out of every aspect of the community. Nomi’s voice is expertly handled, both in Toews’s written word and in her narration of the audiobook. Beautiful, funny writing and excellent characterization. Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O’Neill Heather O’Neill’s debut novel is another old CanLit favorite of mine that has now been made into an audiobook! In fact, there’s a tenth anniversary edition including an introduction read by the author. It’s a story about being a teen essentially living on the streets of Montreal. Told in O’Neill’s deceptively simple style, it’s a book at once innocent, tender, dark, and menacing. O’Neill does an incredible job of drawing the voice of Baby, the young teen caught up in the seedy life of her junkie dad. It takes a talented voice actor to be able to appropriately translate this voice to audiobook. Miriam McDonald gets it right, the peculiar mix of urban savviness and innocence that Baby has on the brink of teenagehood. Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali This debut YA contemporary novel is by a Toronto author. Saints and Misfits is a beautifully complex book about a Muslim teenage girl dealing with a whole lot of stuff at once. The most pressing and troubling is an attempted sexual assault by a boy in her community. But there’s also her crush on a non-Muslim boy and her continual surprise when her expectations about the people in her life aren’t met (in a good way). What I really appreciated about this book was how the teenage voice felt very authentic. And although it deals seriously with the issue of sexual assault, the book is also often funny and charming. Ariana Delwari has an appropriately young-sounding voice that sounds very genuine as a teenage girl. This authenticity is especially necessary for the first-person narrative. I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You by David Chariandy If you loved Ta-Nehisi Coatess Between the World and Me, you’ll love Chariandy’s most recent non-fiction book. It’s a letter to his daughter about race. Chariandy, who has Black and South Asian ancestry via Trinidad, had been thinking about how to talk about race with his daughter since her question “what happened?” at the age of 3 in response to a racist incident. Addressing her now at age 13, Chariandy writes of his past: both his own lifetime growing up as a racial minority in Canada and his familial and ancestral histories in Trinidad. It’s by looking at the past that he hopes to gift his daughter his love, a sense of responsibility, identity, and possible hope for the future. Living In Color The Truth Behind Racial Bias in the Criminal Justice System

According to the NAACP, if African Americans and Hispanics were incarcerated at the same rates as whites, prison and jail populations would decline by almost 40%.   Racial bias is undeniably evident in the criminal justice system and is proven by the simple fact that blacks are more likely than whites to go to jail for the same crime.   In addition, people of color must face unfair treatment by law enforcement which precludes them from thriving in society. Due to this, parents of minorities must teach their children to live unnoticed, out of fear that they will be targeted by the police.   These children are forced to have strained childhoods and are unable to grow as freely as white children do. Many efforts to find a resolution to this issue have been made, but nothing has permanently changed the bias within the system. The criminal justice system must be changed to eliminate racial bias during the sentencing process because it is unjust, threatens the lives of minorities, an d strains the childhoods of children of color. Racial bias creates an unjust society for minorities. Unfortunately, â€Å"African Americans are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of whites†, presenting a clear racial disparity in the criminal justice system (NAACP 2).   Even though African Americans are the minority of the nation, they are the majority in prison systems. In addition, Ronald G. Fryer Jr. discusses in his analysis of the racial differences in police, how research has found that blacks and Hispanics are over 50% more likely to experience a form of force in interactions with police (Fryer 7).   Police officers often target those of color unconsciously because they do not realize that they have this bias. Racial bias is often formed through the background in which a person has; therefore, the officer may have been exposed to certain stereotypes about minorities as they grew up (Struyk 8). For this reason, minorities are dealt unfair disadvantages in society, which makes them more susceptible to being incarcerated or killed.   Furthermore, the lives of minorities in the United States are at great risk due to racial stereotyping. In Angelica Delgado’s study on the experiences of Latinos and African Americans with law enforcement, her results showed that institutional racism, specifically that experienced through police brutality, is a social determinant of health (Delgado 2). Negative encounters with law enforcement have profound, life-altering, and long-lasting effects on individuals, families, and communities at large.   Stress is especially a large problem for physical health, as it is often related to higher blood pressure which can lead to heart disease. Also, there is a very significant psychological pressure on people who experience discrimination and prejudice, and that in turn has an affect on their relationships with other people and their families and communities, making them often more difficult and less s atisfactory. Lastly, children of color are unable to live their lives as freely as white children. They are held to higher standards, and normal childlike behavior is often seen as a criminal threat.   This causes children of color to be pushed out, overpoliced, and overprotected (Bernstein 4). Many efforts have been put forth to eliminate racial bias from the criminal justice system. One way is to â€Å"make it a significant political issue and challenge the agencies to become more accountable. This can be done through lawsuits, like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) chapter in New York sued the New York City government and New York City police department for racial profiling and their stop and frisk policy, and the courts found that those practices were unconstitutional, violated several key rights in the Constitution† (Dunn 5).   Also, African Americans must take action and run for elected positions in government. This is because when they wield more political power and have more elected officials, police departments and those jurisdictions have much less racial profiling. Unfortunately, there are many difficulties in eliminating racial bias because of how different states have different laws. Overall, racial bias can only be eliminated if people work together to change the criminal justice system.   Fairness in the system is one of the crucial justice issues of any period. It is a long standing issue that can be changed.   It is vital that new attempts to change the system are put into action, because minorities will never have the ability to gain the true freedom of an American if they are constantly worried about being harmed or persecuted due to their skin color.   Ã‚  It limits their opportunities to live a satisfactory life, to have access to necessary resources and opportunities to increase their standing in life, to get better educations and jobs, services, and more. It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly how to make a chan ge.   It is not certain whether or not people will stick to and follow through with the change. In order to find the true answers to the issue, the laws which may prohibit the elimination of racial bias must be examined and the roots of the issue amongst communities should be identified.   Ã‚  A precedent needs to be established so that equality is practiced in all states. The repeated cycle of stereotypes must be ended. This starts with finding people who are willing to make a difference within their own communities. Mass media has a very influential part in today’s society. Consisting of radio broadcasting, books, the Internet, and television they allow information and entertainment to travel at a fast pace as well to a vast audience. This vast majority of information can easily manipulate and or persuade people to have certain stereotypes on specific genders. TV commercials are one of the most influential structures in the media. Looking back 20 to 30 years, stereotypes were clearly welcomed on TV and in commercials, but today it’s starting to become a problem. The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s most widely known and controversial comedies. Written in the late 1590s, its’ controversy stems from the modern mindset between tolerance and prejudice. Shylock, who was â€Å"at once a fabulous monster, the Jew incarnate, and also a troubling human uneasily joined with the monster in an uncanny blend†, is now looked at as a victim in light of the prejudice bestowed upon him now being recognized. Shylock’s character is so stereotypically Jewish that he becomes known as villainous instead of a victim. Where Happiness Comes From Where Happiness Comes From by Tonia L. Harmon Their farm was two hundred acres of corn fields, cows, pigs, and, of course, chickens. No farm would be complete without chickens. At the southeast corner of the farm, behind the smaller corn field, was the brook with clear cold water that reached past my knees. On most weekends my family would go to visit our friends, the Tailors, who had at one time seven boys to keep them company. All of them were grown with their own lives to attend to, except for Dan, who stayed on at the farm to help keep up the crops. His younger brother Dave still came back to the farm, from the busy city, to visit and bring his children to see their grandparents. Even though they were about the same age as my brother and I, we did not play with them because they were greedy and didn't suit our playing qualifications by continuously changing rules and cheating. It was rare that we encountered them anyhow, and that suited us fine. Most of the time we would stay the whole weekend. Our parent's elected to sleep in a tent, while my brother and I slept in one of the many cozy bedrooms of the farmhouse. We loved it there and secretly both he and I wished that we could stay forever. There were separate reasons why we loved it there. My brother, Forest, had a choice of over a dozen different old cars and trucks. Forest was allowed under the hoods so that he could tinker with the engines and figure out how they functioned. He was a ten-year old mechanical genius. Everyone knew that he was going to grow up to be a mechanic. When he was five or six, Forest found an old transmission behind the barn; in two hours he had taken it apart and put it back together again without prior instruction. Old mister Tailor watched from a distance while Forest disassembled and methodically assembled the transmission to its original form. Our parent's are proud and still equally impressed as the day it happened. They still brag and carry on about his genius endeavor, as they do with both of us for the many special encounters accumulated during our formative years. My reasons for loving that farm cannot be so simply expressed. I cannot narrow my reason into one great memory, and I cannot say when exactly I fell in love with the Tailor farm; perhaps it was from the first time I stepped onto the warm and inviting soil. There were moments when I'd get a burst of happy energy and run through the field with my hair flying behind me. The corn was at least four feet above my head. Running through it gave me a secret place all my own, like a completely separate planet that was occupied by only me. Most often, after playing in the corn field I went to the bend in the brook where the deepest spot was, and after removing all unnecessary clothing I swam, pretending I was a mermaid in the ocean. I loved to watch my long red hair sway under the water with my graceful swimming motion. If the sun's ray danced on my hair just right, beautiful colors would stream through the clear utopian water. After supper each night everyone collected on the large screened-in front porch. The grown-ups drank cans of cold Coors beer while my brother and I sipped cans of Sprite or 7-up. Lightening bugs danced in the near darkness while crickets sang to the melody. After a time the porch light came on and a card game would emerge for the men to play. My mother and Mrs. Tailor would stay at their seats to talk or share recipes. Forest and I shared the responsibility of getting cold beer from the kitchen keeping all satisfied. On one occasion I asked to join the game. Surprisingly, I was more than welcome; Forest was invited too but declined. He was more interested in finding a Mason jar to collect lightning bugs. Motivations for the Age of Exploration During the 1400s, Europeans started venturing beyond their borders to foreign places. This period of time when Europeans explored, colonized, and settled in foreign countries is known as the Age of Exploration. It began in the 15th century and lasted until the 17th century. The event led to numerous advancements in geographic knowledge, and also improved the interactions and trade between countries. Several factors favored Europe as the starting place of exploration. Medieval religious fervor made captains feel it was their duty to convert everyone they met to Christianity. Europe was also in good conditions economically, and its geographic position drove it to find routes to Asia, which then led to the Americas. Both the Renaissance and the Crusades were crucial in the development of the Age of Discovery. Renaissance ideas motivated the Europeans to experience and observe other cultures, giving them the courage to interact with different people. The Crusades also opened the minds of the Europeans which brought them in contact with different goods and religious ideas. After the Renaissance and the Crusades, the Age of Exploration began due to the Europeans’ urge to spread Christianity, their eagerness for fame, their desire for wealth, and the improvements in technology that allowed voyages. A major motive for the Age of Discovery was the religious desire to convert people to Christianity. Bartolomeu Dias, an early Portuguese explorer, stated his motives for voyage: â€Å"To serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness and to grow rich as all men desire to (Miller).† The first two motives stated were both religious goals that Christians hoped to accomplish. Another story that they believed in also motivated them to explore. This was the myth of Prester John (The Myth of Prester John). Although fake, the Europeans believed in this story where the king of the legendary Christian nation had ordered all Christians to join him in a religious battle against the infidels. This myth persuaded many Christians to join the holy wars, or the Crusades, which were extremely important factors of the Age of Exploration. Europeans thought that it was their duty to fulfill God’s wishes and save souls by spreading Christianity. The Crusades played a significant role in building up to the Age of Exploration (The European Voyages of Exploration). It exposed the Europeans to new people and places, giving them the new objective to convert more people to Christianity. Setting up missions was one of the religious goals of exploration. Missionaries that traveled with explorers preached to the natives of different areas to achieve their religious wishes. Francis Xavier was a Jesuit missionary that went to India with the Portuguese explorers (McGrath). He learned the local languages and was able to preach in their native tongue. This was a more effective way of spreading religion which made thousands of people convert to Christianity. Missionaries like Xavier were influential in saving the souls of people from all around the world, completing an objective of exploration. The Age of Exploration developed along with the Renaissance, as these ideas influenced their desires for individual glory. The Renaissance stressed the individual human being, so explorers wanted to earn fame and honor for themselves with successful explorations. People during this time wanted to live enjoyable lives, unlike people during the medieval times who wanted to reach heaven. Because of this, people during the Renaissance worked for themselves and worked to become rich in order to live an enjoyable life. Explorers also wanted to voyage in search of individual wealth and fame. Explorer Christopher Columbus was an example as he worked to achieve fame and fortune (Christopher Columbus). His contract with the Spanish rulers agreed that when he discovered land, he would be given a noble title, could keep ten percent of the riches he found, and would be able to govern the lands he discovered. Kings and queens also wanted glory for their countries, so they promoted exploration. Wit h the invention of the printing press, it became possible for one to become famous for what he or she did. With this in mind, explorers became motivated by personal glory to discover lands in the New World. The â€Å"rebirth† of classical Greek and Roman values that brought many changes to how people thought was created by the Crusades. The holy wars let the Europeans see beyond their own world, sparking their interest in learning which led to the Renaissance. The secular outlook made people think more about religious authority, and also gave them scientific curiosity (Brotton). It was a time when people wanted to learn more about the world. Humanism brought intellectual curiosity about the world to people’s minds, and the discoveries made led to a new age in search of scientific knowledge. The will and courage to learn and understand different cultures made people want to explore and see more around the world (Lecture 2). This idea links with the Renaissance in general, and also the human nature to explore and gain information on the unknown. The search for trade routes that led to wealth was an indispensable cause of European exploration. The Crusades and trade brought the Europeans to spices, silk, and other luxuries. The Europeans demanded spices from the East to add flavor to their bland food, making it extremely valuable. When important trade routes to the East were blocked by the Turks, the explorers embarked to find better ones (FC67). Better trade routes could increase the profit made in the markets of luxuries. Thomas Mun’s ideas on the effects of foreign trade stated in England’s Treasure by Foreign Trade showed how he supported foreign trade since it increased England’s treasury (Koeller). He tells of how England exports more goods than it imports, thus increasing the profit they made from trade. This idea links to mercantilism, where people thought that there was only a limited amount of money in the world. In order to make the kingdom strong, they had to have more wealth than other countr ies. Mercantilism motivated the Europeans to explore and search for trade routes, which could then help them become wealthy and powerful. Before the newer trade routes existed, trade for goods in the East was controlled by the Italians and Muslims. The Muslims sold the goods they got from the East to the Italians at a raised price, and then the Italians also increased the price of the goods sold to Europe in order to make profit. The Europeans were not happy with the amount they had to pay, so they wanted to find a route directly to Asia to bypass the middlemen. Before trade routes were found, a pound of cinnamon cost twenty-four pence, which would have taken a master carpenter three days to earn (Kelley). Although costly, Europeans still considered spices a necessity and were willing to pay large amounts of money for them. In order to acquire these goods and more wealth, explorers searched for trade routes, and the Portuguese accomplished this with their trading empire. Previous costs of spices could be anywhere from ten to a hundred times the original price, so a huge difference was made to these prices after the tra ding empire was created (Munro). It allowed merchants to bring back goods at the original price paid at the source, making it affordable to more Europeans. The Age of Discovery would not have been possible without the geographical knowledge gained during this time. Before maps had improved and included locations on global scales, sailors used the color of skies and waters, the types of vegetation, and also the types of sea birds in the area to identify their location. Later, portolan charts, coastal maps of Europe and the Mediterranean, and global projections were created, giving the Europeans better ideas of the world (FC81). With clear ideas of direction, sailing became a lot easier and explorers were also less likely to sail to the wrong place. Prince Henry the Navigator helped improve the techniques used to explore and map the new lands. He developed the first nautical map that replaced the portolan charts (Briney). The portolan charts kept sailors close to the shore, but the nautical maps allowed them to sail away from land which improved the results of travel, because more could be seen and discovered. Prince Henry also introduced navigational schools to improve the geographical knowledge of explorers. Furthermore, various naval inventions and advancements allowed the oceans to be sailed. Some of the most important were the magnetic compass, the astrolabe, and the changes in shipbuilding (FC81). The compass invented by the Chinese gave a better sense of direction. The astrolabe, perfected by the Muslims, helped determine latitude. Great changes were also made to the European ships. The hulls of the caravels were bulkier and sturdier, allowing voyage in large waves. The southern triangle or lateen sail allowed ships to sail against the wind, which was not possible before. These inventions made sailing overseas an attainable task, leading to the discovery of the various areas separate from Europe. The Age of Exploration was a crucial period of time that made influential differences in not only the history of Europe, but the history of almost the entire world. This event would never have occurred without the Crusades, Renaissance, and advancements in technology. The will to fulfill religious desires, search for wealth, and pursue personal fame drove the Europeans out of the Old World in search of new places over the seas. All the voyages made helped link different countries together, and even influenced the basis of knowledge nowadays. Although the Age of Discovery ended in the 1600s, the effects of it still make significant changes to the world today.
